Drop Spindle Spinning
The drop spindle is an ancient tool that has been used
for generations to spin fiber into yarn. It
is still a popular way to spin wool, angora and cotton
fibers as well as dog hair. Drop spindles are easy to
use and very portable. They are relatively inexpensive;
an economical way to get started in the craft of hand
spinning. The objective of this workshop is to give the
student the basic fundamentals of hand spinning
fibers using a drop spindle. We will cover how the
spindle works to spin fiber, tying on the leader and
understanding the process of twist, how drafting works,
holding the fibers, adding the twist, winding on and
joining more fiber. A brief explanation of removing the
yarn and setting the twist will complete the workshop.
Materials will be available for sale or you may
bring your own. Prepared wool (sheep) roving will be
the easiest fiber to learn on.
